Committee : Deacons
Date : 10/4/2007
Present : Betsy Steele (Chair), Rev. Mitzi Eilts, Robin Pool, Susan Christopher, Sybil Johnson, Dana Callahan, Rick McGrath
Minutes :
1. Welcome:

Mitzi opened our meeting with prayer.

September minutes presented and approved with the following corrections:

3A – 16 Sept Woody’s Service

4A – Ken arrives at end to present Pastors report

2. Reverend M. Eilts’ report:

Diaconates involvement in Home Communion can commence in October, with who are the volunteers, and times needed to support, will follow.

To support Home Communion, a chalice is needed, and we all voted to acquire one.

Mitzi is visiting nursing homes with Deacon Sally as support, which is going smoothly.

3. Youth Report:

Dana reported the following:

Youth met 30 September, with 17 attending ( Ten 7th graders and older).

a. Interests in Crop Walk – various youth canvassing neighborhoods for donations.

b. Different youths from surrounding churches are interested in Ecumenical events (Catholics, Baptists, FCC Deep River).

c. 26th or 27th October Silver Lake Retreat – Few/none youth can attend due to other commitments (sports, school events, etc.)

d. Some youths interested in returning/to attending church.

e. Ask them to come 3 Nov. “Let It Shine” (6:30 – 7:30 PM) event to illuminate our steeple, with dessert social after.

4. Remaining Committees:

Flowers – No conflicts and doing well.

Readers – No conflicts and doing well, four youths volunteering!

Coffee Hour - No conflicts and doing well.

5. Sunday mornings Odds and Ends

Pastor is ‘tweaking’ Sunday service to get it running well and smoothly.

a. Be more attentive to distracting noises – car alarm, kids down the hall, (movement/assembly of choir – too long), as examples.

b. Head deacon remains in narthex (front doors entry) and maintains eye contact with Pastor for starting/fixing events.

c. Coordinate with organist interlude and be ready to march to podium, before Westminster chimes (at start of church).

d. On Communion Sundays, ushers distribute bulletins with reminder to parents, that kids start Sunday school at 10 AM. NOT wait for pastor to send kids.

6. New Business

This Sunday is World Communion Sunday

a. Communion is by Intinction with two Deacons distributing.

b. Bring shawls, cloths, covering, serapis, covers from around the world that are symbols of our heritage mix, sharing, caring and love of all peoples of the world.

c. Pumpkins decorating this Sunday.

How/who can the Diaconate be providers to our church peoples for:

Home communion

Visitation to shut-ins

Communications channel for New Members/Old Members/shut-ins

Communications to Pastors from people about loved ones births, deaths, disasters/grieving/help in simple tasks.

Closed at 8:40 PM, following prayer with Mitzi.
