Present : Senior Pastor, Ken Peterkin; and Betsy Steele, Ted Bliss, Wini Olson, Wendy Foster, Emily Williams, Mark Foster, Don Male, Susan Nilsen, Mary-Lawrence Sinclair, and Jean Karr
Minutes :
Ken called the meeting to order.

Motion was made to accept the minutes of the April 12, 2006 Council Meeting as read.

Treasurer’s Report There was no report.

Council Meeting Process: Committee reports and Council minutes are to be sent to ecminutes@yahoo.com Council Meeting begins at 7:00 PM.

Reports of Boards and Committees:

Christian Education: (Wendy) On April 30th, the youth did a super job conducting the worship service about the YSOP trip to NYC on April 28/29. May 14th the youth will be conducting the worship service. Summer Teachers: Sign-up sheet will be posted May 7th. Curriculum Meeting on June 5th: possible curriculum choices for next year will be reviewed. Don talked about recognition for attendance.

Diaconate (Betsy and Wini) Lenten Period: Tenebrae supper, we need to rethink the number in attendance for next year. Good Friday’s service was quite impressive. The Vigil’s slots were pretty much filled in, with a few people doing two to three hours. The book review was very successful. Summer Schedule: One service at 9AM. Disaster Preparedness: Ken will do the morning announcements for the month of May. The announcements will include mentioning church/building exits, with the head deacon pointing them out as he speaks.

House and Grounds (Mark) Drainage project specifications: Herb Clark’s crew replaced most of one of the drainage lines, replaced part of the sidewalk, and installed gutter guards. Mark said that we owe Herb and Sherry a big thank you.

Music (no representative) The committee met May 2nd. The City Singers concert was May 6th. The next meeting is Sept. 5th.

Pastoral Relations/Personnel Committee (Mary-Lawrence) Performance appraisals are in progress. Some are done and some are not.

Outreach (Jean) Thirty people attended the Gateway Luncheon on May 8th. Four students from VRHS helped. Mother’s Day cards and Father’s Day cards will be for sale. CROP Walk on Oct. 15th – FCC Essex is the sponsoring church.

Stewardship no representative

Trustees (Ted) Drainage Project: The committee thanks Herb and Sherry Clark for the extensive work that was done. Utilities: Electricity has gone up suddenly. It was suggested that a hot water heater time-of-day meter be installed to conserve electricity when hot water demand is low. Our service contract for heat will be renewed. May Breakfast: Estimated profit is $1,200, to be confirmed by actual profit when all monies accounted for.

At Large Members: Three people will be attending the State Conference meeting on May 13th. Ken will attend a meeting in East Haddam on May 15th. Marcus Borg Book Discussion dinner: May 12th. Talent Show: May 13th.

Updates:

Associate Minister Search: Five candidates will have phone interviews.

Nominating Committee: A few slots need to be filled. They are meeting next week.

Membership Committee: Don Male will meet with Pastor Ken and Susan Nilsen.

New Business:

Discussion of Clerk position: A new church clerk is needed. The position will include new duties.

Office hours change: (10:00 – 1:30); working efficiently with the church secretary. 8:30 – 10:00 office locked, phone not answered.

Clergy Staff Report: Ken Peterkin, Senior Pastor; There will be one full service at 9:00 AM during the summer. It will be 30 – 40 minutes long and casual. Council discussed. May 21st there will be 3 baptisms. Six people will officially join us in membership on June 11th. There will be a baptism on June 18th. June 25th will be the first summer service. In July there will be a service at Viney Hill Beach and in August at Pettipaug. Ken discussed the possibility of fewer or shorter committee meetings, all meeting at the same time.

Rummage Sale is May 20th from 9:00 – 3:00.

Annual Meeting is May 24th 6:30 potluck dinner, 7:30 meeting.

(Ken needs power edger and paint scrapers.)

Shoreline Church flyer was brought in by three people, Don read from the flyer and Council discussed.
