Committee : Deacons
Date : 5/4/2006
Present : Betsy Steele and Wini Olson, Co-chairpersons; Judy Bibbiani, Caitlin Callahan, Celia Francis, Pat Reed, Rick McGrath, Deborah Minor, Marianne Steinbach, Rev. Ken Peterkin and Joan Berquist, Secretary
Minutes :
Ken opened the meeting with prayer.

Minutes from the April 6, Diaconate Meeting were approved as corrected.

Instead of workshop, the Youth Group will be conducting the Worship Service on May 14th.

Pastor/Committee Reports:

Pastor Ken: Ken has asked that all church minutes be placed on the Web site. The E-mail address is ecminutes@yahoo.com. Ken will do this when he receives them from the secretaries. Copies can always be obtained from Sue in the office.

Ken has also asked that, we as landlords, respect all those who rent space from the church. If conflicting schedules seem evident, dialogue and coordination is the best route. Wini brought up a potential problem with some of the wording in the church's Deed. Ken will contact the Kottkes to check this out.

Ken also wants to remind ushers to keep people moving in the Narthex as they enter for the Worship Service.

There will be a talent show on May 13th.

On May 14th, the Youth will be conducting the Worship Service.

There will be a baptism on May 21st for a baby and 2 teenagers.

May 24th is the date of the Annual Meeting, preceded by a congregational dinner.

May 28th there will be a Memorial Service.

June 3rd, is Rick and Delcie's wedding.

June 4th, will be Confirmation.

June 11th, six new members will be joining the church.

June 18th there will be another baptism.

September 10th, there will be a special service to remember 9/11/01.

Acolytes (Deborah Minor): We will not be using Acolytes for the summer services. It is also not clear whether we will be using the confirmands as Acolytes next September.

Coffee Hour (Marianne): There is an opening on June 25th. The Diaconate discussed taking care of Coffee Hour, during the summer schedule. Definite plans will be made at the June meeting. The coffee maker has disappeared. Ken will get two 50 cup pots for Sunday. The Stewardship Committee will do Coffee Hour in October.

Communion (Betsy): Betsy reported that she has talked with Barbara about honoring the "Holy Squirters" on June 18th. We will discuss this at next month's meeting.

Flowers (Judy): Flowers are needed for the last two Sundays in June. Betsy suggested we have the sign-up sheet for flowers posted during the summer months so that we will be ahead for September. We will use the silk flowers for the summer months.

Readers (Deborah Jones): There was no report. We need to have readers signed up at least two months in advance so Sue can have the names in Passages as a reminder.

Ushers (Pat): Pat passed around the sign-up sheet for the summer months. We will use 2 Deacon/ushers for the summer services.

Visitor's notes (Celia): Celia has mailed out 4 notes this month and is working with Sue to get additional name tags printed up.

Special Projects (Rick): See report under Disaster Preparedness -

Youth (Caitlin): Caitlin reported that 12 Youth attended the YSOP trip to NYC on April 28th/29th. On Sunday April 30th, the Youth did a super job conducting the Worship Service and we applaud them. On Youth Sunday, they will conduct the service, also do the 8 A.M. service and Coffee Hour. They will also be taking new members to Harkness Park on June 11th. Rick suggested we give them more publicity.

Church Council (Betsy/Wini): Betsy reported that the LRP Committee discussed the possibility of forming a Membership Committee. Also Paula reported that the Year-to-date income has exceeded expenses. Wini, our representative on the Nominating Committee, has not been able to secure our 3 needed members.

Old Business:

Lenten Period: Tenebrae supper, we need to rethink the number in attendance for next year.

Good Friday's service was quite impressive. The Vigil's slots were pretty much filled in, with a few people doing two to three hours. Also, the book review was fantastic.

New Business:

Summer Schedule: One service at 9AM. No Acolytes will be needed. We will use the

Silk flowers for the altar. Coffee Hour will be hosted by the Diaconate in the Cove View Room (to be finalized next month.) We should have some advertisement in the newspapers.

Disaster Preparedness: Rick reported on the procedure for evacuating people in the

case of an emergency. A suggestion was made that we might teach a

course in CPR for the neighboring community and us. Starting May

7th, Ken will do the morning announcements for the month of May.

The announcements will include mentioning church/building exits, with the head deacon pointing them out as he speaks.

Confirmation Sunday: We have 5 confirmands this year. No rehearsal will be needed

and there will be no dinner.

Diaconate organizational meeting June 1st: Betsy would like all job descriptions

brought up to date, and everyone should know what he would like to do next year.

Closing Prayer: Ken waved our prayer blessing as we ended the meeting

Respectfully submitted,

Joan W. Berquist, Secretary
